Grey Lady Cantata

2024
Bread and Puppet Theater / Glover, VT

Presented at the Bread and Puppet Museum in Glover, Vermont, the Gaza Grey Lady Cantata was co-directed in spring of 2024 by Peter and Maria Schumann, featuring a cast of volunteers and apprentices. Reviving music from the original Grey Lady Cantata created by Peter Schumann in the late 1960s and early 1970s to protest the Vietnam War, this new iteration evokes the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The performance unfolds through the haunting presence of life-sized grey lady puppets, moving between dreamlike and brutal vignettes. Through gesture, procession, and tableau, the work becomes both a lament and an act of resistance — carrying forward Bread and Puppet Theater’s lineage of political theater as a communal ritual of witness and remembrance.
